Where is the Algarve?

The Algarve is located in Portugal’s southernmost region. It’s also the southwestern most area of the Iberian Peninsula and mainland Europe.

The Atlantic Ocean surrounds the coast of the Algarve to the south and also to the west.

The Algarve is divided to the east by the Guadiana River, which also borders Spain.

The Algarve is divided into two regions: the Barlavento and the Sotavento.

The Barlavento, meaning “windward,” encompasses the western part of the Algarve, where the Serra de Monchique mountain range creates a dramatic backdrop to the coast. This region is renowned for its rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and charming towns like Carvoeiro and Lagos.

In contrast, the Sotavento, meaning “leeward,” occupies the eastern part of the Algarve, where the land flattens out and the beaches stretch for miles. This region is known for its golden sands, gentle waves, and laid-back atmosphere.

The Sotavento is home to popular resort towns like Albufeira and Vilamoura, as well as the stunning Ria Formosa Natural Park.

A common question asked is “Does the Algarve belong to Spain?” No it doesn’t. Algarve belongs to Portugal. Portugal and Spain are independent neighbour countries.
